Our Magical Soil is truly magical! The Chimacum Valley is rich with fertile land consisting of nutrient rich Semiahmoo muck. Magical Soil is a symbiosis between Semiahmoo muck, compost and sand.
WE NO LONGER ABLE TO DIG ANY MORE Semiahmoo muck
We do have compost
Short's Family Farm is excited to integrate BioChar into its family of soil products. It is produced locally in Port Townsend from forest and untreated wood products.
Biochar is a charbon-rich product from a process called 'pyrolosis' - the heating of dry biomass to high temperatures in an oxygen-limited environment. Biochar's high surface area increases water and nutrient retention in the soil, reducing the need for watering and compost/mineral applications over time. That same porosity encourages soil biodiversity, creating a thriving habitat for microbes, worms and fungi. It helps create a 'living soil' which is vital in sequestering carbon from the atmosphere!
